Frequently asked questions

About this site, our tools and how we approach mental health information.

Are you therapists?
No. Therapist Words is an education site, not a therapy practice. We translate ideas therapists use into plain English and check our work against professional and government sources. Nothing here replaces care from a licensed professional.
Who writes Therapist Words?
Therapist Words is written by Mara Ellison, author of two self-help books, together with the Therapist Words editorial team. See our About page and editorial policy for how we research and review content.
Can your quizzes and screeners diagnose me?
No. Our reflections and screeners (like the PHQ-9 and GAD-7) can help you notice patterns and start a conversation with a professional. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose.
Is what I type into your tools private?
Yes. Our tools run in your browser and save to your own device’s local storage. We don’t receive or store what you type.
Do you offer therapy or counseling?
No. If you’re looking for a therapist, see our step-by-step guide to finding one in the US, including low-cost options.
What should I do in a crisis?
In the US, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, available 24/7. If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911. Our Get Help Now page lists more resources.
Can I share your articles and graphics?
Yes, please share links and pin our graphics. Please don’t copy full articles to other sites.
Do you have a newsletter?
Yes. Our free weekly letter shares one therapist word, one idea and one small practice. You can unsubscribe any time.
Where can I suggest a topic?
Email us. Many of our articles started as reader questions or popular pins.
Struggling right now? In the US, call or text 988 any time, 24/7. More crisis and support lines.
